“Good Morning America” co-host George Stephanopoulos recently tweeted out a photo of his daughter Elliott while on vacation, wearing a back brace over her clothes due to her scoliosis.
The caption reads: “so proud of my daughter, Elliott. Wearing brace every day”, and included the hashtag #NationalScoliosisMonth to bring awareness to this disease.
Scoliosis is defined as a curvature of the spine in an S or C shape that usually affects teenagers during puberty; though in extreme cases it can cause problems with breathing, milder cases can be treated with a brace, which is meant to straighten out the back.
Sufferers of scoliosis can usually lead fully physically able and full lives, provided their condition is treated. Those who are too poor or beyond the reach of good medical care can see the effects of scoliosis and a curved spine affect the rest of their lives.
Other well-known scoliosis sufferers include Sarah Michelle Gellar, Rene Russo and Usain Bolt, who was able to overcome his condition to become an Olympic gold medalist and one of the fastest sprinters on the planet.
